About Me and My Work

Vivian Hankin

Since 1980 I have dedicated my professional life to helping individuals and couples overcome difficulties and build stronger relationships. I take our work seriously, am non judgmental, supportive, and also contribute an ease and a sense of humor. I specialize in trauma survivors, including verbal, sexual and physical abuse, co-dependency issues, despondency, eating disorders, addictions, anxiety and panic, work problems, and issues of loss and confusion about sense of self.

Individuals:
Many of you may experience that others may see you as 'self-confident' and 'in charge of your life.' You may, indeed, be successful (or sense you could be), but underlying doubts or difficulty saying your truths get in the way of fully being the person you want to be.

I will help you connect with and strengthen that part of you that knows you are not the negative messages you were led to believe about yourself as a young child. You can separate your inauthentic beliefs from your true qualities and see your Authentic Self emerge as you gain a strong sense of who you are in relationship to yourself, others, your work, your other passions in life and to your personal spirituality.

Couples:
Couples who come to see me may have problems getting along with each other, such as, among other things, dealing with resentments, work, communications, trust, children, relatives, money or step families. You may be experiencing the effects of an affair by one partner, or may want to have pre-marital discussions to make sure how best to be in a relationship with each other.

As a couple working with me, you will lean how to communicate and resolve issues in a safe, nurturing environment where each partner is respected equally. You will each be heard, validated and become attuned to the others' feelings and needs.

Some of you may find that a few issues come from your past and you will have the opportunity to develop insights into each partner's sources of the problems being brought bring to the relationship. This will allow you to realize how unresolved old issues may have been negatively impacting your present relationship without your realizing it. You will learn they do not apply to your partner and are no longer appropriate ways of interacting now as an adult within a relationship. This process provides the opportunities for your individual personal growth and 'healing,' as well as a new closeness in the relationship.

Ways I Work:
I work in an interactive way. I am trained in most psychological modalities of therapies and use a mixture of what I believe to be the most helpful at any given moment with the particular work we are doing. We will work 'in the here and now' with the problems you are experiencing. We will define them, set goals, and work towards positive changes.

I am also especially helpful in showing you how some positive experiences of childhood can be used to strengthen your ability to work better towards your goals. Or, if we find that there were difficult experiences during your childhood resulting in ways you defined yourself. If so, they may still affect your beliefs about yourself and interfere in your interactions with others. , I define this as your interacting from your inauthentic Self. We will identify them, put them in perspective, and you will be free to become and live from your Authentic Self.

As a Result:
During the above processes of our working together you will learn to understand yourself and others from a different, free, more positive perspective allowing you to make the changes you wish in order to enhance your reaching your goals and the type of relationships you would like in life.

I hope you will allow me to accompany you on your personal path toward your Authentic Self.
